A large
18th
century antique surveying
compass which is signed J
Cooper, Newport on the silver compass dial,
dating the compass to the mid 1700’s. The elegantly engraved dial has only the
signature, 4 cardinal points and the angle 0 -360 degrees around the
circumference. The blued compass needle has an automatic clamp which holds the
needle from turning when the lid is closed. The dial is 6 inch diameter and the mahogany
case measures 7 by 7 by 1/14 inches with brass catches. The whole instrument
is original as far as I can tell and is in excellent working order. - on

mid 19th century, silvered, Compass
Sun Dial, in a Moroccan leather
covered, wooden case with calendar
in the base. This type of universal inclining
dial, first introduced in the mid 18th century. The 2 ½ inch
diameter chapter ring is engraved in Roman
Numerals, on silver, for the time and holds the sprung gnomon. The silvered inclination
scale is engraved from 0 to 60 degrees and is hinged to fold for
transportation. The enclosed silvered compass dial is
engraved with the cardinal points as well as 0 to 90 degree quadrant scales. The
sundial folds flat to fit neatly in its case

very fine 18th century Augsburg pattern
equinoctial compass sun dial with
original paper instructions in German & French. It
also comes in (later) teak fitted case elaborately
carved to fit the contours of the compass horizontal
plate. The compass is engraved on the underside of the
compass box with latitudes for several European cities, and with the makers name

abbreviation for Andreas Vogler, compass
maker in Augsburg. The 4 ½ cm. diameter chapter ring
is engraved in Roman numerals for the time and holds the sprung gnomon. The
folding latitude arc is engraved from 0 to 90 degrees. The elaborately carved
and engraved horizontal plate is mercurial gilded and
engraved with a church, trees and foliate decoration. The glazed compass has a
blue iron compass needle with a brass cap and rotates above a silvered scale
containing the cardinal points of the compass in Latin, and the local magnetic
declination (dating it to the second half of the 18th century). The
whole dial folds down neatly for storage
or travelling. The instrument is in good working order and is an excellent
example of the 18th century German pocket compass dial

A very fine mid 19th century, silvered, antique
Sun Dial, in its original velvet lined,
Moroccan leather covered, wooden case . This 2
1/2 inch diameter universal inclining dial, first introduced in the mid 18th century,
is signed on the inclining plate F
L WEST., London. Francis Linsell West, son of Francis West who
took over from Adams, was at this address from 1849 to 1885. The chapter ring is
engraved in Roman Numerals, on
silver, for the time and holds the sprung gnomon. The silvered inclination
scale is engraved from 0 to 60 degrees and is hinged to fold for
transportation. The silvered compass dial is engraved
with the cardinal points as well as 0 to 360 degree scales and the blue iron
compass needle is clamped for transport by a small brass
lever. The sundial folds flat to fit neatly in
its case for transport.

A fine English compass
clinometer in a 2 1/2” diameter brass case, with
hinged sights and needle clamp and comes in a leather carrying case.
The compass itself has a balanced needle with
“N” signified by a brass bar, and a paper dial showing 0 – 360 and 16
cardinal points, and a “Fleur de Lys” at the North, its glass cover held in
place with a brass retaining ring. The
clinometer arm has a fine point and scales 90 – 0 –
90 degrees and inches rise or fall per yard. A fine surveyor’s pocket

late 19th century prismatic compass.
The hinged sights have a sighting line and viewpoints. The maker’s name (J.Hicks,
8 Hatton Garden, London.) and fleur
de Lys are printed on the compass card. The lacquered black compass has a
serial number (227)
and hinged front and rear
sights, which fold for storage. The whole instrument is in excellent condition. -
