SEXTANTS
An antique nautical
sextant with a “Tulip frame” in its fitted mahogany case,
and signed on the arc by T.J.Williams,
Cardiff. This fine 19th century sextant
really is in excellent condition. The arc with the name is engraved on silver
and is very clear, as is the vernier. The ebony shaped handle on the reverse
is sound and scale clamp is in good working order. The sextant comes with two
telescopic sights – a pinhole sight and a day telescope. It has the original
arsenic black/green lacquered finish, good mirrors and swinging scale
microscope. The silver scale is calibrated -5 to 135
degrees. The sextant has three horizontal shades and three vertical shades, all
in good order. The instrument and it's accessories are housed in the fitted
mahogany carrying case which has brass hinges and
latches. This sextant is a very good example of the elegant tulip framed model -

OCTANTS
An antique ebony and
brass mid 19th century Octant,
with ivory nameplate engraved “F.
PRIMAVESI & SON, CARDIFF & SWANSEA”. This vernier octant has
good mirrors and inset ivory scales. Both the main and vernier
scales are clear, the scales are divided to -3 to 109 degrees and the vernier 0
to 20. The octant has a pinhole sight, 4 vertical
shades, 3 horizontal shades and are in good condition, and an index arm clamp
thumbscrew for the vernier. The instrument measures nearly eleven inches in
height and the scale radius is eight and three quarters inches. There are three
brass feet on the back to support the octant when it is
not being used. A nice example of a mid 19th century ebony octant.

NAUTICAL INSTRUMENTS
A fine American early twentieth century, eight
day, marine chronometer/deck watch, signed
on the face WALTHAM, in it’s
original brass bound mahogany case. The
2 1/4 inch dial has subsidiary state of wind (red spot) and seconds dials and
also has the “8 DAYS” displayed on the face. The movement
is also engraved with the name WALTHAM and the serial
number, 16,630540 dating it to 1908. The movement sits in gimbals,
which is clamped into the outer case by a lever and locked by a thumbscrew. The
two tier brass bound mahogany case has a glass window,
brass hinges, a working lock & key and catch to the upper cover and has the
name WALTHAM engraved on a brass plate at the
front. The overall dimensions of the case are approximately five inches each
way. The case has all original finishes and the chronometer is in excellent

A fine Star globe by Kelvin & Hughes Ltd.
London in its transit case with its brass axis and base rings &
pointers. These star globes were used for celestial navigation together with a
sextant to navigate ships around the world before the advent of electronic
navigation. Introduced in the 1940’s by Hughes, these globes were updated at
each astronomical epoch, this one being last updated in 1975
for the Admiralty. This fine Celestial Star globe is complete and without any
serious flaws and is housed in a dovetailed mahogany case
measuring 11" x 10 1/2" x 10 1/2", with leather carrying handle,
brass hinges, brass screws and catches. The globe itself
is in fine original creamy-white condition clearly showing the stars and constellations.
